"Born to Die"
by Laura J. Marcin

On the evening that it all began
Knelt the Son of God, in the form of a man.
Pouring out his heart to the One above,
Humanly fearful, but strengthened by love.
His closest friends were exhausted from grief,
and slept through the vigil He asked them to keep.

Then over the hill came a priest of high,
and this God-man knew the time was nigh.
Men armed with swords to escort Him to death
Demanded the capture of Jesus of Nazareth.
Answering His captors with quiet dignity,
the Son of Man said, "I am He".

Bound by a vow to see Scripture fulfilled,
the Son of God was soon to be killed.
Killed to redeem a sinful nation,
to whom His death was a celebration.
As they flogged and mocked the King of the Jews,
did He think to himself, "I do this for you?"

With a cap of thorns piercing into His head,
He carried His cross to what lay ahead....
Long, sharp nails through bone and flesh,
salty sweat burning in wounds so fresh.....
He watched them gamble for sport and fun,
Sneering "Save yourself now, God's only Son!"
His breath was coming in a choking gasp,
Yet "Father, forgive them" He managed to rasp.

Darkness was falling all across the land
As the Son completed the Father's plan.
With a cry loud enough for all to hear it,
He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.
The curtian split with an echoing sound,
And everyone near felt the shaking ground.
The people looked on, wide-eyed with fear,
And said "Who was the One we crucified here?"

I wonder, too, if it began to rain
Tears of a Father for His only boy's pain....

His body was lain in a borrowed tomb
While His Father prepared the Upper Room.
For three days later, He would be called to rise,
To make men worthy before God's holy eyes.

And rise He did, on day number three,
Forever maintaining His legacy.

His greatest purpose while on this earth,
Was to carry our sin from the time of His birth.
For all of us, our souls to save,
God sent Jesus to beat the grave.

Jesus was born to be nailed to a cross.
He knew that there was a certain specific time that he would humbly and submissively walk along with a group of soldiers to be tied up, whipped, ridiculed, slapped in the face, beard pulled from his face, spat upon, and then forced to carry His own cross to Golgotha when He was so completely drained that He could hardly walk.

When He was only twelve He told Joseph and Mary

Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

He understood as a youth that He had a Heavenly mission.
He also knew who His father was.

It's no wonder that He told Peter in such strong words,
and pointed out the source of Peter's thoughts.

Mark 8:31-33 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed,
and after three days rise again.
And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter,
saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

It is also said of Jesus

John 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

He knew how much He would suffer
for you ......for me

Thank you, Jesus

that He gave His one and only Son
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish
but have eternal life."

God's Grace: The Cross

In 1967 while taking a class in photography at the University of Cincinnati, I became acquainted with a young man named Charles Murray who also was a student at the school and training for the summer Olympics of 1968 as a high diver.
Charles was very patient with me as I would speak to him for hours about Jesus Christ and how He had saved me.
Charles was not raised in a home that attended any kind of church, so all that I had to tell him was a fascination to him.
He even began to ask questions about forgiveness of sin.

Finally the day came that I put a question to him.
I asked if he realized his own need of a redeemer and if he was ready to trust Christ as his own Savior.
I saw his countenance fall and the guilt in his face. But his reply was a strong "no."
In the days that followed he was quiet and often I felt that he was avoiding me, until I got a phone call and it was Charles.
He wanted to know where to look in the New Testament for some verses that I had given him about salvation.
I gave him the reference to several passages and asked if I could meet with him. He declined my offer and thanked me for the scripture.
I could tell that he was greatly troubled, but I did not know where he was or how to help him.
Because he was training for the Olympic games, Charles had special privileges at the University pool facilities and some time between 10:30 and 11:00 that evening he decided to go swim and practice a few dives.
It was a clear night in October and the moon was big and bright.

The University pool was housed under a ceiling of glass panes so the moon shone bright across the top of the wall in the pool area.
Charles climbed to the highest platform to take his first dive.
At that moment the Spirit of God began to convict him of his sins.
All the scripture he had read, all the occasions of witnessing to him about Christ flooded his mind.
He stood on the platform backwards to make his dive, spread his arms to gather his balance, looked up to the wall and saw his own shadow caused by the light of the moon. It was the shape of a cross.
He could bear the burden of his sin no longer. His heart broke and he sat down on the platform and asked God to forgive him and save him.
He trusted Jesus Christ twenty some feet in the air.

Suddenly, the lights in the pool area came on.
The attendant had come in to check the pool.
As Charles looked down from his platform he saw an empty pool which had been drained for repairs.
He had almost plummeted to his death, but the cross had stopped him from disaster.
